Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis deals with the painting work of the northern German artist Franz Radziwill, who lived from 1895 to 1983 and produced most of his work between 1915 and 1971. The main reasons for this thesis were on the one hand motivated by the fact that Radzivill’s 850 paintings had not been methodically analyzed. On the other hand the multitude of materials used by the artist promised an interesting inside in painting structure.
The thesis starts with an overview of the life of Franz Radzivill from an arthistory point of view. Afterwards his artistic development is analyzed with respect to influences from other artists.
For the main part of the thesis six charactistic paintings are examined regarding their painting technique. The paintings were chosen from a larger selection of 30 paintings from the Stadtmuseum Oldenburg to represent Radzivill’s work throughout his different creative periods. A variety of restaurative analysis methods is applied to quantify painting structures and used materials. For example, by utilizing light under grazing incidence, a magnifying glass and a microscope the alteration of the carrier material during Radzivill’s life could be demonstrated. UV- and IR-reflectography allow insights into varnish quality and preparatory drawings. Microchemical analysis indicates the materials used for painting.
Finally the results of the painting examinations are compared with the arthistoric findings of the life of Franz Radziwill. The possibilities of further investigation of the artist’s work are discussed as future prospects.
