Abstract: Subject of the diploma thesis are four malanggan- masks from Neuireland owned by the Roemer- and Palizaeus- museum Hildesheim. Initially the masks are presented and compared, then placed their arthistorical and histococultural context.
A description of the materials used on the masks follows along with the various methods of their making especially regarding the comparability of the objects.
Then the current state of each mask is examined recording all the existing damages, their causes and indications of make overs subsequently resulting in a treatment concept for conservation.
Finally specially designed mask- supports as conservational provision for further storage are proposed and further suggestions for presentation methods meeting the required high standarts of museums are made.
