Anna Kathrin Guthmann: The Oslo giant gradual – problems with moist smoothing of large-format painted parchment Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: The first page of the Spanish gradual from the National Library of Oslo is a beautifully illuminated parchment from the early 16th century. This large side with its thick layers of paint consists of two parchments agglutinated along their short side. For the conservation of such an object, detailed knowledge of the stable but also sensitive material parchment is essential. An introduction to the existing literature on moistening and smoothening of parchment is given, before the results of diverse pre-experiments on parchment samples and originals are discussed. Additionally, the stability of parchment agglutinations and assis, as well as the behaviour of the colours that are used on the page with respect to aging and light were studied. The painted page of the gradual was then conserved, based on the results of the experiments. Diverse options to mount the large-sized page of parchment after the conservation are presented and discussed.
