Applying Cellulose Ethers for Structure Consolidation

The paper presents the results of more than fifteen years of research and practical work on applying cellulose ethers for structure consolidation of different artefacts containing plant-based materials. The requirements for consolidation materials are well known: they must be stable, durable, their ageing products must be inert, and the consolidation process should not influence the aesthetic appearance of the artefacts. Furthermore, we have to make sure that the consolidation materials have a chemical affinity to the artefacts' materials. Research on cellulose derivatives has been consistent in its findings. Since 2003, researchers at the Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre have been investigating the properties of eight cellulose ethers (based on methyl cellulose, methyl-hydroxyethyl cellulose, hydroxyl-propyl cellulose and sodium carboxymethyl cellulose) of different polymerization and substitution degrees under photochemical and climatic ageing. The cellulose-ether films were produced from solutions that applied various solvents and their additives. The results have shown that the chemical and optical properties of cellulose ethers change only slightly over an extended time period, although the solubility is preserved after the artificial ageing. In further research, cellulose ethers have been tested as consolidation agents for wood, canvas, undercoating and paint layers as well as for the lining adhesive of paintings on canvas. Experiments have been carried out with specimens of decayed wood, samples of damaged paint layers, as well as with samples imitating lined painting on canvas. Some of the samples were artificially aged by means of a photochemical process, while others were exposed to an environment of variable temperature and relative humidity. The results of the research show that cellulose ethers are suitable and effective as consolidants and adhesives in a variety of conservation processes. The results of the practical application of cellulose ethers will be illustrated by several conservation cases.
