| Abstract: | The durability of transparent furniture coatings against electromagnetic radiation is important for maintaining their aesthetic apppearance and protective function. Exposure to light can cause photochemical degradation processes that impair both functions of the coating films ( MILLS/WHITE 1987, S. 134). This thesis investigates the UV resistance of selected transparent furniture coatings with the addition of two UV-Stabilizers. To this purpose, samples were artificially photochemically aged using UVC radiation. UV-induced changes in properties were evaluated through macroscopic and microscopic examinations as well as quantitative measurements of colour and gloss. Under the selected test conditions, the coating systems showed different degrees of photochemical stability (Regalrez® 1126 ≫ shellac > nitrocellulose varnish). The results indicate a positive, coating system-dependent, stabilising effect of the hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) used. The UV absorber tested, on the other hand, was found to be unstable against radiation in the UVC spectrum, regardless of the system. Overall, the findings provide initial evidence that UV stabilizers can improve the durability of transparent furniture coating materials; however, the practical significance of the results remains limited due to the chosen test conditions. For conservation applications, therefore, further investigations are required to verify their effectiveness under more practice-oriented conditions and to ensure that the additives fulfill the fundamental requirements for the preservation of the objectes. |
