| Abstract: | This master´s thesis aimed to investigate different types of leather used for the exterior cladding of carriages in relation to mold infestations. For this purpose, cowhide with two tanning types and three different coatings were tested on 15 molds, some of which originate from practical applications. The central research questions were whether differences between the leather types in terms of infestation are evident and whether the infestation remains superficial. The experiments were conducted in the laboratory and subsequently evaluated using optical examinations in surface and cross-section, DNA staining of the molds, measurement of the water activity (aW) value, and pH value. Afterwards, four objects, which have leather similar to that used in carriages, were examined for potential long-term effects. The results show the differences among the leather types studied here, but also highlight limitations of the experiment. |
