| Abstract: | This thesis focuses on the preservation of a collection of hand puppets from the Museum of Applied Arts, created by Camilla Birke (Wiener Werkstätte) between 1921 and 1925. It investigates the art-historical and cultural-historical classification of the collection, comprising 22 hand puppets and 3 accessories made from various materials, including painted wood, textiles, fur, feathers, metal, glass, and gelatin. Supported by scientific analyses, a detailed material and condition assessment was conducted and documented in a catalog, identifying various damage patterns and defining condition categories. Conservation and restoration measures are discussed, with particular focus on the restoration of five selected hand puppets, specifically the stabilization of “dynamite”-weighted silk fabrics using stitching-based support methods. Additionally, a storage and display concept has been developed |
