| Abstract: | As part of this Bachelor´s thesis, the preservation of ancient Egyptian quartz ceramics is analysed using two Ushabti figurines (PM 303 and PM 5493) of the Roemer-Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim as examples. Based on a material-technological and cultural-historical classification, a detailed inventory and condition assessment is carried out using macroscopic and microscopic methods. In addition, experimental specimens are produced in order to differentiate between manufacturing and damage phenomena and to record the water absorption coefficient as a material parameter. The work shows that the conservation of ancient Egyptian quartz ceramics requires specific approaches, as production-related inhomogeneities and the interaction of glaze and sintered body lead to particular damage patterns. The requirements for consolidation agents for the object PM 303 are presented. The importance of preventive handling and climate-stable storage was also emphasised, as these play a decisive role in preventing further damage. Future research should focus in particular on the fine structural characterisation of the material, the comparability of glaze reduction with known glass damage and the long-term stability of conservation measures under museum conditions. |
