Nona Schneider: Material analysis and condition description of rolled architectural designs by Karl Schäfer (1844-1908). Recommendations for conservation and restoration Back

Overview:

Abstract: The bachelor´s thesis deals with two large-format architectural designs by Karl Schäfer from 1889 in the archives of the TIB (Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology and University Library Hanover). Both objects are rolled and cannot be opened due to their rigidity, which makes it difficult to view and digitise their contents.
The thesis explores the causes of their condition and proposes suitable measures. The basis for this is the object description, condition assessment and a look at the object´s history and historical context. The materials are examined scientifically by means of spot tests and fibre analysis, and the results are interpreted. Recommendations for the conservation and storage of the designs are made and the possibilities and risks of humidifying treatment for flattening are presented.
