Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis presents the initial restoration and conservation research of the mural paintings in the choir of the Protestant Church in Horka since their exposure in 1962 and 1964. In the 1960s, three gothic painting phases were uncovered and the medieval content was thoroughly restored. Currently, the choire portrays the palimpsest overlay of reduced painting layers, building alterations and the restorations. The three gothic painting phases were investigated regarding composition and condition, followed by the development of measures and their application on a test area. The practical conservation focused on cleaning and stabilising the paint layers and filling the cavities. To enhance the pictorial readability, a reduction of the surfacing gypsification as well as the uncovering of grout supplements and retouchings were performed. Finally, the integretion of the surface defects and restauration results of the 1960s were tested with colour and texture retouchings.
