Seitenübersicht:
Zusammenfassung: The high-gloss polishes Polish 10099 and HAS, manufactured by Zweihorn, are an integral part of restoration practice due to their effect on transparent wood finishes, which is described by the manufacturer as “refreshing.” However, their use must be viewed critically, as the exact composition of the substances remains unknown. Furthermore, several pieces of furniture in the Art Nouveau collection of the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg exhibit whitish deposits in the pores, which are suspected to be related to the use of these high-gloss polishes.
The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which the effects of using Polish 10099 and HAS can be quantified using color and gloss measurements. Two series of experiments were conducted on test specimens made of two different types of wood with two different coating systems. In addition to the application of the polishing agents, influencing factors such as the amount applied and differences between the formulations were taken into account. As another experimental parameter, the test specimens were dried under different storage conditions with normal and increased air circulation. ATR-FTIR analyses were performed to determine the classes of substances present. In addition, UV examinations were used to detect possible changes in the transparent coatings outside the visible spectrum.
