Zusammenfassung: This thesis examines fixatives for water-soluble colorants of the late 19th and early 20th century. The aim was to analyze existing fixative systems with regard to their effectiveness, reversibility, material compatibility and long-term stability. More than 50 fixatives were examined by means of a systematic literature search and classified according to their mechanism of action (cationic, anionic, mixed-ionic, film-forming, volatile). It was found that cationic fixatives are particularly effective with anionic dyes. However, often they are associated with conservation risks such as limited reversibility or cellulose degradation. Film-forming and volatile fixatives offer alternative approaches, but their areas of application are limited. Mixed-ionic systems such as Pentafirm C® + Hydrocol APA® or Memocon BCP have proven to be effective, but they also entail conservation risks in terms of reversibility, residue formation and insufficiently researched long-term effects. The paper emphasizes the need for further long-term studies and defines research gaps regarding the ageing resistance, reversibility and material compatibility of modern fixative systems. It is emphasized that a universally applicable solution does not exist. Material- and dye-specific strategies are required.
