| Zusammenfassung: | This bachelor thesis examines a severly damaged fragment of a parchment manuscript daring from the 13th century. The aim of the study was to identify potential causes of the damage and to develop an appropriate conservation strategy based on the findings. For this purpose, the object was examined and photographically documented under various lighting conditions. The observations were mapped and described in detail. Presumed causes of damage were tested using simple analytical methods. The results of ATP/AMP testing and tape-lift samples indicated a historical microbial infestation. In addition, indicator papers confirmed the presence of metal ions in the writing media, which can catalyze the degradation of parchment. Among other factors, the material‘s sensitivity to moisture led to the exclusion of certain conservation treatments. The proposed conservation concept involves local stabilisation using remoistenable tissues and subsequent digitization of the object. Combined with protective housing and storage under stable climatic conditions, this approach is intended to ensure the long-term preservation of both the material and the information it contains. |
