| Zusammenfassung: | The aim of this thesis is to understand the manufacturing method of a textile endband on an incunabulum from the Dombibliothek Hildesheim and to develop a suitable concept for conservation. The evolution of handcrafted endbands in bookbinding were presented to provide a historical context. The endband was thoroughly examined, its condition documented, and the causes of damage leading to degradation were described. The technique used was analyzed by describing and comparing weaving techniques used in the production of decorative endbands. A sample of the relevant weaving technique and a reconstruction of the endband were created to understand how the endband has been made. Based on this, conservation methods were discussed and compared. Recommendations for storage and handling were formulated. |
