Zusammenfassung: During the 16th and 17th centuries, the Netherlands underwent profound political and religious upheavals that significantly impacted artistic production. In this context, the genre of architectural painting emerged, characterized by its emphasis on precise perspective-an approach that had previously played only a minor role in Netherlandish painting. Pioneering figures such as Hans Vredeman de Vries and the van Steenwyck family developed compositional principles and perspective schemes that influenced artists well into the mid-17th century.
Against this historical backdrop, a previously little-studied panel painting is examined using both technical and stylistic analysis. The aim is to determine-through a combination of material investigations (including cross-sections, SEM-EDX, and UV light examination) and stylistic comparisons-whether the painting is an original work from the early 17th century or a later imitation in a historicizing style.
Based on the analytical findings, the documented condition, and the results of cleaning tests, a treatment proposal was developed that includes both conservation and restoration measures.
