Zusammenfassung: his diploma thesis focuses on the diverse approaches of sculptures made from concrete. The
starting point is made by three artificial stone figures from the State Collections of Lower
Austria, which were created around 1950. Although the sculptures were made from similar
materials, they exhibit differing effects in terms of colour and surface texture. The central aim
of this study is to explore the original characteristics of these concrete sculptures. To achieve
this, the design principles and surface treatments of the artworks are examined and
documented.
For comparison, selected examples of the Viennese “Kunst-am-Bau” also analysed due to the
fact of similar materials and production period. The specific characteristics related to
production techniques, coloration, and surface structures are recorded/compiled in a surface
catalog. Subsequently on these findings, a conservation concept is developed that respects
and aims to preserve the original artistic effect/intent.
