| Zusammenfassung: | This master´s thesis focuses on developing conservation strategies for arsenic-containing and powdery book edges and using the example of a book from the “Dombibliothek Hildesheim”. The aim of this work was to analyze the material condition of the color cutting, evaluate suitable consolidation methods and investigate their effects on bound arsenic. The investigations show that arsenic-containing and powdery color sections pose a substantial conservation problem, as they continuously lose pigments, which are also harmful to health. Following a detailed condition analysis, different consolidation methods were tested. The method of compressed air fogging with four percent Sturgeon Glue without covering the paint layer proves to be the most effective. It showed minimal color changes and pH value changes while consolidating a high degree of consolidation for the color sections. Additionally, a dry cleaning process was performed prior to consolidation to remove surface contaminants related to storage, thereby enhancing the effectiveness of the consolidation. The thesis concludes with detailed recommendations for preventive conservation measures, safety precautions during handling and storage, and long-term conservation strategies to ensure the safe handling of such contaminated materials. Furthermore, the transferability of the developed method to other powdery color sections and arsenic-containing objects is discussed, aiming to enable broader application in conservation practice. |
